Banksy’s Peckham Rock originated as a cheeky intervention at the British Museum in 2005, a rogue piece of concrete adorned with a faux “primitive” cave painting, blending seamlessly into the Roman Britain gallery. The imagery of a spiked figure pushing a shopping cart alongside a pierced buffalo slyly interrogates notions of value, authenticity, and institutional authority. In 2018, the piece returned as an authorised wooden print, complete with barcode and Pest Control approval, bridging the gap between guerrilla street art and museum legitimacy.
