Girl With Balloon

Girl With Balloon

Few images have become as closely associated with Banksy as Girl With Balloon. Originally appearing as a street artwork in London before being released as a print edition in 2004, the image depicts a young girl reaching towards a heart-shaped balloon drifting away in the wind. Simple in composition but rich in interpretation, it has become one of the most recognisable works in contemporary art and remains a defining image within Banksy’s wider body of work.

About The Series

The enduring appeal of Girl With Balloon lies in its ambiguity. Some viewers see the girl losing the balloon, while others interpret the image as a moment of hope, with the balloon still within reach. Themes of innocence, freedom, love and optimism have all been associated with the work, helping it resonate far beyond the traditional art market.

The image first appeared on walls across London in the early 2000s and quickly became one of Banksy’s most recognisable motifs. Over the following years, it was adapted into several street interventions and charitable campaigns, cementing its status as one of the artist’s most important visual symbols.

Editions And Variations

Released through Pictures On Walls in 2004, Girl With Balloon was produced as an edition of 150 signed screenprints and 600 unsigned screenprints. Alongside these standard editions, Banksy also created a rare group of 88 Artist’s Proofs featuring alternative balloon colours, including Gold, Dark Pink, Light Pink and Dark Purple. Each colourway was produced in an edition of 22 signed Artist’s Proofs, making them significantly scarcer than the standard red edition.

Collectors may also encounter hand-finished canvas works, diptychs and other rarer adaptations connected to the image. As with all Banksy editions, provenance, condition and Pest Control authentication remain important considerations when evaluating individual examples.

Collecting Girl With Balloon

For many collectors, Girl With Balloon represents the quintessential Banksy image. Its cultural significance extends beyond the print market, particularly following the creation of Love Is In The Bin, which emerged from the self-shredding of a framed Girl With Balloon during a Sotheby’s auction in 2018. That event introduced the image to an even wider audience and reinforced its place in contemporary art history.

Today, the series remains one of the most actively collected Banksy print releases. Demand spans first-time Banksy buyers, established collectors and institutions alike. While individual examples vary considerably depending on edition type, condition and rarity, the work continues to be regarded as one of the cornerstones of Banksy’s print market.

Notable Auction Results

Girl With Balloon has produced some of the most notable moments in Banksy’s market history. In 2021, Love Is In The Bin sold for £18.6 million, setting a new auction record for the artist at the time. The rare Artist’s Proof colourways have also achieved exceptional results, with the Gold AP selling for more than £1.1 million and the Dark Purple AP achieving £791,250 at auction.
